Percy Garratt Shewell was appointed a Lieutenant in the Hampshire Regiment on 25 November 1885. With the 2nd battalion he served in the Burma Expedition of 1885-87. Promoted to Captain on 25 November 1896. Served in the campaign on the N.W. Frontier of India under Sir William Kockhart, 1897-98, as Field Paymaster Tirah Expeditionary Force, for which he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the brevet of Major. Shewell was promoted to Major on 20 May 1898. He was latterly ranked as a Military Accountant 3rd Class in the Indian Staff Corps. At the time of the Coronation of 1911, having left the Army, he was a Chief Superintendent of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
