Prior to the Great War Jit Singh served as an Assistant Surgeon in the I.S.M.D., serving in the Gyantse relief, the Daphla Political Mission and the Abor expedition of 1911-12, in the latter he was in medical charge of the 26th Mule Corps. During this time he was on Plague Duty at Dera Ismail Khan, 1908-09, Cholera Duty at Lucknow, 1910-11 and Plague Duty at Lucknow, 1911. During the War he served in France and Mesopotamia being in Sub Medical Charge of 2000 beds in a General Hospital. For his services in Mesopotamia he was mentioned in despatches in October 1916. After the war he was on duty combating fever in a refugee camp at Baquba, Persia, 1919-20, he then served in the Waziri force, January 1921-April 1922 being employed at the 43rd Indian General Hospital for which he was mentioned in despatches in June 1923. He was employed at H.E. Viceroy’s Dispensary, May-September 1922 and was later in Sub Medical Charge of the Civil and Military Dispensary in Simla. During this time he was awarded the M.S.M. on 10 July 1917 and created a Sardar Sahib in 1919 and Sardar Bahadur in 1929. He was specially promoted to Subadar Senior Sub-Assistant Surgeon in 1920. In 1934 he was honoured with the award of the O.B.I. 2nd Class with the title ‘Bahadur’ and was promoted in the Order to 1st Class with the title ‘Sardar Bahadur’ in the following year. In 1943 he was promoted in his military rank to Honorary Assistant Surgeon. During 1936-38 he was employed at the Government Medical Store Depot at Lahore, retiring in 1938 but recalled to active duty in 1940 due to the war emergency. As ‘Sardar Bahadur Subadar-Major and Honorary Captain in the I.M.D. he was awarded the M.B.E. in June 1942. He again retired from the service in September 1945, going into medical practice at Lahore and New Delhi.
