William Wilson was born on 31 July 1874 and enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 1 November 1898. He served in the Boer War with the 18th Company R.A.M.C. attached to the Guards Brigade. Appointed a Warrant Officer Class 1 on 12 October 1914 he proceeded to France as Sergeant-Major of a Field Ambulance of 5 Division (13, 14 & 15 Field Ambulances). The division fought at Hill 60, Gravenstaefel, the 2nd battle of Ypres and Loos 1915, at High Wood and Longueval, battle of the Somme 1916, Givenchy, Arras, Vimy Ridge, Oppy, 3rd battle of Ypres, Gheluvelt and Passchendaele 1917. The division moved to Italy in November 1917 and returned to France in April 1918 where it fought at Nieppe, Bapaume, Gouzeaucourt and Maubeuge 1918. Wilson was awarded his Long Service medal in 1916. He retired on a pension on 25 August 1920.
