Charles William Profeit was born at Tarland, Aberdeenshire on 23 August 1870, the 2nd son of Dr Alexander Profeit, Commissioner to Queen Victoria at Balmoral. Educated at Aberdeen University, he qualified with a M.B. and C.M. in 1893. Commissioned a Surgeon-Lieutenant in January 1895 and promoted to Surgeon-Captain in January 1898, he served with the R.A.M.C. in the Boer War. He was present in the advance upon Kimberley, including the actions at Belmont, Enslin, Modder River and Magersfontein. Operations in the Orange Free State, February-May 1900, including actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Vet River and Zand River. Operations in the Transvaal in May/June 1900, including actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill. Operations in the Transvaal east of Pretoria, July-November 1900, including the action at Belfast. He was promoted to Major in October 1906. In the Great War he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in March 1915 and was Temporary Colonel whilst A.D.M.S. of a division, January 1916. For his services he was five times mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 19 October 1914, 17 February 1915, 4 January 1917, 24 December 1917, 30 December 1918), awarded the D.S.O. (London Gazette 1 January 1917) and C.M.G. (1918). Post-war, he served on the N.W. Frontier, being again mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 3 August 1920) and awarded the C.S.I. (1920). Placed on Retired Pay in 1924, Colonel Profeit died on 5 February 1937.
