Arthur Brownfield Fry was born on 29 May 1873. Educated at Eastbourne College, the London Hospital and the London University, he gained the M.R.C.S. England, 1896; L.R.C.P. London, 1896; M.B., 1898; M.D. Tropical Medicine , 1909; D.T.M., 1909; D.P.H., 1914. He entered the I.M.S. as a Lieutenant in July 1899 and served on the N.W. Frontier of India in the Waziristan campaign 1901-02 for which he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 8 August 1902). Promoted to Captain in July 1902, service in the Tibet expedition followed. He was promoted to Major in January 1911 and served as Acting Lieutenant-Colonel, February 1916-January 1919, being promoted to that rank in January 1919. During the Great War he served in France and Flanders, 1914-15 and Iraq, 1916-18. For his services during the war he was twice mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 15 August 1917, 5 June 1919), was awarded the D.S.O. (London Gazette 25 August 1917) and C.I.E. (London Gazette 3 June 1919). In April 1926 he was promoted to Colonel. Postwar, he was Professor of Hygiene at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, 1922-26; A.D.M.S. of the Presidency and Assam District, 1926-30 and was appointed the Viceroy’s Honorary Surgeon c.1928. In 1930 he retired from the I.M.S. and was awarded the C.B. Colonel Fry died on 1 September 1954. Sold with copied research and copied group photographs.
