Military General Service 1793-1814, 4 clasps, Busaco, Nivelle, Orthes, Toulouse (W. Barry, M.D., Assist. Surgn., 40th Foot) nearly extremely fine £1400-1800

William Barry became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in April 1808 after serving an apprenticeship of three years in Hereford. He was appointed a Hospital Mate for General Service in April 1808 and was commissioned an Assistant Surgeon with the 40th Foot in January 1810. He served briefly in Moore’s Expedition to Sweden, 1808 and thence in Portugal and Spain, 1808-11; Ireland, 1811-13 and Spain and Southern France, 1813-14, and was present with them at the battles of Busaco, Nivelle, Orthes and Toulouse. Barry then served with the regiment in the West Indies and North America, November 1814-May 1815, before returning to Europe and service with the 40th Foot in the 1815 Campaign, being present at the battle of Waterloo. In 1818 he gained a M.D. at Glasgow University. Promoted to the rank of Surgeon on the Staff on 19 November 1821, he then served in Sierra Leone but he was placed on Half Pay on 25 June 1828 as a consequence of ill health. He died at Bath on 2 June 1863. Sold with recipient’s copied Return of Services.
