W. & A.K. Johnston were a famous cartographical engraving and printing company, started by the brothers in 1826. The company was among the first to produce fully researched and accurate maps of much of the world, and many of their works were used as standard texts well into the 20th century. William Johnston became Sir William Johnston, Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1848-51.
