The Russell Institution for the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Knowledge was founded by private subscription in June 1808 to provide a revenue-paying purpose for an assembly hall constructed in Coram street. Edward Wedlake Brayley, FSA (1773-1854), historian and topographer, librarian and secretary of the Institution from 1825 until his death in 1854
