Hussars.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, unnamed as issued, pierced as issued, with triple ring suspension, minor edge bruising and contact marks, very fine (3) £300-£400

James Caldwell was born in Co. Tyrone and attested for the 4th Dragoon Guards on 15 August 1845, transferring to the 10th Hussars on 1 April 1846. He was promoted Corporal on 24 November 1854 and served with them in the Crimea for 1 year and 2 months. Promoted Sergeant on 2 March 1856, he transferred to the 18th Hussars on 1 March 1858, and was appointed Troop Sergeant Major 1 October of that year. He was discharged to pension on 14 September 1869, after 24 years and 24 days’ service, of which 11 years and 3 months had been spent in India.
