‘The
Mary Jane missed stays and got on rocks. The boat was launched but could not communicate with the fishing boat, no line being available. Stickley and Connolly waded into the sea and threw a rope to the Coast Guard boat. The rope fell short so Bird sprang overboard and secured it. The rope was then used to tow the fishing boat off the rocks and her crew of 2 were rescued. A heavy sea was breaking on the rocks and great danger was experienced by the men named’. (Ref. P.R.O. BT.261.5).

Commissioned Boatman W. J. Stickley and Boatman A. M. Bird of the Coastguard, Inniscrone, and Constable W. Connolly, R.I.C. of Inniscrone, were each awarded the Sea Gallantry Medal in bronze for their rescue of the
Mary Jane also of Inniscrone.
