The dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Conqueror was launched on 1 May 1911 and was part of the 2nd Battle Squadron at the Battle of Jutland, firing a total of 57 twelve-inch shells.

Frederick James Willies was born in Plymouth on 22 March 1879 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 23 July 1894. Advanced Petty Officer First Class, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 25 March 1912. Promoted Chief Petty Officer on 1 August 1914, he served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Conqueror, and was shore demobilised on 13 June 1919, subsequently joining the Royal Fleet Reserve.
