A gold C.M.G. pair awarded to Surgeon-Captain Sir William R. Kynsey, Army Medical Department, Inspector-General of Civil Hospitals, Ceylon, and Member of the Legislative Council of the same colony

The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, C.M.G., Companion’s breast badge, gold and enamel, with gold swivel ring and straight bar suspension, with silver-gilt buckle on ribbon; Ashantee 1873-74, 1 clasp, Coomassie (Surgeon, 1873-4); together with the parchment document of appointment to Knight Bachelor with attached (broken) wax seal in tin case, medals good very fine and better (3) £1500-2000

William Raymond Kynsey was born on 29 April 1840. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, he qualified as a M.D., F.R.C.P.I. and L.R.C.S.I. He entered the Army as a Staff Assistant Surgeon in 1863, being appointed to the Royal Artillery in 1867 and to the Staff again in 1872. Promoted to Surgeon in the Army Medical Department in 1873, he served in that capacity in the Ashantee War of 1873-74. Kynsey transferred to Half Pay (without h.p.) in February 1875 on being appointed Principal Civil Medical Officer and Inspector-General of Civil Hospitals in Ceylon. He was later a Member of the Legislative Council and J.P. of the the colony. Created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1888, he was Knighted for his services to Ceylon in 1897. Sir William Kynsey died on 11 January 1904.
