East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, 1893-94 (Surgeon Capt. C. W. Duggan, A.M.S.) nearly extremely fine £450-500

Charles William Duggan was born in Edinburgh on 14 October 1866, the son of Major William Nelson and Crystal Duggan. He qualified as a M.B. at Edinbugh in 1887 and entered the Army Medical Service as a Surgeon-Captain in July 1891. With them he served in operations against the Sofas in West Africa during 1893-94. He attained the rank of Major in July 1903 and was placed on Retired Pay in 1909. He was employed whilst on the Retired List in Lincoln. Returning to active service on the outbreak of war, he was mentioned in despatches in 1917. Major Duggan was killed in action when the steamship Leinster, enroute from Kingstown to Holyhead, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on 10 October 1918. Of the 680 passengers and crew, some 480 were killed in the attack. Sold with copied details.
