Memorial Plaque 1914-18 (George Mears), nicely mounted in a wooden glass-fronted case

George Mears was born in Hackney and enlisted at Hounslow. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 4 October 1914 and was awarded the D.C.M. (London Gazette 1 April 1915) ‘For gallantry on 31st October 1914, in conveying messages whilst exposed to heavy shell fire’. He died of wounds on 6 October 1917, aged 30 years and was buried in the Godewaersvelde British Cemetery.

William Mears was born in Middlesex, England, on 6 July 1878. Living in Paris, Ontario, he enlisted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force in June 1916, having previously served in the 25th Brant Dragoons and 38th Dufferin Rifles. Serving with the 215th Canadian Infantry he was discharged in November 1916 as medically unfit. He died on 18 March 1919 and his name is commemorated in the Paris Cemetery.

The two were sons of Mrs Clara/Carrie Mears of 46 Chapman Road, Hackney, London. Sold with a quantity of copied research. Note: The name “G” or “George Mears’ appears several times in the C.W.G.C. roll.
