Chief Carpenter Frederick George Hartland, Royal Navy, was killed in action at the battle of Coronel, 1 November 1914, aged 51 years, whilst serving on the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Monmouth. He was the son of William Thomas and Sarah Hartland of Devonport and husband of Amy Blanche Lee Hartland of 18 May Terrace, Plymouth.
