A fine Great War D.C.M. and K.P.M. group of ten awarded to Commander Alexander Robertson, Assistant Commissioner, Metropolitan Police, late Scots Guards

The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Officer’s breast badge, silver and enamels; Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (12739 L. Cpl. A. Robertson, 3/S. Gds.) official correction to name; King’s Police Medal, G.VI.R., 2nd issue, for Distinguished Service (Alexander Robertson, D.C.M., Supt. Metropolitan Police); 1914-15 Star (12739 L. Cpl., S. Gds.); British War and Victory Medals (12739 Pte., S. Gds.); Defence Medal; Coronation 1937; Coronation 1953; Police Exemplary Service Medal, G.VI.R., 2nd issue (Dep. Comdr.) mounted court style as worn, together with matching group of mounted miniature medals, nearly very fine or better (20) £2000-2500

D.C.M. London Gazette 14 November 1916: ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. After the capture of the first enemy line Lance Corporal Robertson, although wounded, volunteered to establish a post into “No Man’s Land”, when the situation was obscure. The post was isolated and exposed to heavy fire, but he refused to come in until the second relief party came.’

Commander Alexander Robertson was born in 1896 and joined the Metropolitan Police Force in 1919. In the First World War he served with the Scots Guards in France from October 1915, and was awarded the D.C.M. He was promoted Sergeant in 1928, Station Sergeant in 1930, Inspector in 1931, Sub-Divisional Inspector in 1934, Chief Inspector in 1937, Superintendent in 1943, Chief Superintendent in 1949, Deputy Commander in 1950, and Commander in 1952. He is a keen golfer and chairman of the M.P.A.A. Association Football Club. In 1949 he was awarded the King’s Police Medal for distinguished service. Sold with a studio portrait photograph, a group photograph of Sergeant Robertson and his Squad, Scots Guards, circa 1916-18 (
folded), and a later photograph of Robertson in full dress on parade.
