Piers Alexander Hamilton Edgcumbe was born on 2 July 1865, the only son of the 4th Earl of Edgcumbe and Lady Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton - the 4th daughter of the 1st Duke of Abercorn. He served in the Boer War of 1899-1902 and subsequently commanded the 3rd battalion Duke of Cornwall’s light Infantry. He succeeded his father as 5th Earl in 1917 and was a J.P., D.L. for Cornwall and Devon and Deputy Warden of the Stannaries. He married Lady Edith Villiers, the only daughter of the 5th Earl of Clarendon in 1911. He died on 18 April 1944 and was succeeded by his cousin Kenelm William Edward Edgcumbe.
