Alan Colquhoun Grant was born on 1 July 1874, the 2nd son of Colonel G. C. Grant, Judge of Karachi, and was educated at Charterhouse and Sandhurst. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry in October 1893, he was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1896. With the 2nd Battalion H.L.I. he served in the Malakand Field Force, 1897-98. In 1899 he was transferred to the 15th Sudanese Battalion and saw service in that country. He served in the Sudan Civil Administration from 1900 to 1906, when he joined the Ministry of the Interior in Cairo. During his time in Sudan, he was advanced to Captain in August 1900 and was awarded the Order of Medjidie. In January 1911 he was appointed Commandant of the Suez Canal Police based at Port Said. He continued in this post throughout the Great War, during which time he was additionally the Provost Marshal of the Canal. For his services during the war, he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Order of the Nile. In 1922 he was appointed Commandant of the City Police, Alexandria and in 1923 granted the title of ‘Pasha’. Lieutenant-Colonel Grant died on 27 March 1924 following an operation for appendicitis.
