Quartermaster Serjeant William Thomas was present at the battle of Alma. In The Origin and History of the First or Grenadier Guards, Vol. III, by Lieutenant-General Sir F. W. Hamilton, it states, ‘The following six Non-Commissioned officers of the Grenadier Guards, who particularly distinguished themselves at the Battle of Alma, were recommended by their commanding officer for the medal and annuities for gallant conduct in the field, viz: Sergeant-Major William Thomas, Colour-Sergeant George Blurton, Quartermaster Thomas Hill, Drill-Sergeant John Algar, Armourer-Sergeant Charles Smith, Colour-Sergeant Henry Russell. As, however, under the existing regulations such a reward could only be given to one non-commissioned officer, Sergeant-Major Thomas was the recipient’.

Serjeant J. J. Hill and Armourer-Sergeant T. H. Hill, both of the Grenadier Guards, were sons of Quartermaster Serjeant Thomas Hill.
