Pair: Private J. Donaldson, 42nd Regiment

Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Alma, Sebastopol (J. Donaldson, 42nd Regt.), officially impressed naming; Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (1428 J. Donaldson, 42nd Royal Highlanders), engraved naming, plugged and fitted with ‘British Crimea’ style suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine (2) £220-260

James Donaldson was born in Kircaldy in Fife, Scotland. A Weaver by trade he attested for service with the 42nd Highlanders at Perth on 4 July 1844, aged 16 years 2 months. His service papers state, ‘Served in the Eastern Campaign of 1854, 5 & 6, present at the Battles of Alma, Balaklava & Siege of Sebastopol. Engaged in the Suppression of the mutiny in India from ? Nov. 57. Present at the Siege & final Capture of Lucknow’. His records show several short periods of imprisonment during his service. Donaldson was discharged as being unfit for further service on 28 October 1863. Sold with copied discharge papers and copied extract from medal roll.
