Christopher William O’Neill was born on 6 September 1929 at Guildford, Western Australia. He enlisted into the Royal Australian Navy on 17 January 1949. On 9 March 1950 he was posted to Albatross as a Naval Airman in the Fleet Air Arm, being ranked as N.A.2 in May 1950, N.A.1 in August 1952 and Leading Naval Airman in April 1953. He was posted to the aircraft carrier Melbourne for the first time in February 1956 and then again in January 1963, being promoted to Petty Officer Airman 3rd Class on 3 May 1963. Appointed to the carrier again in December 1964, he served in the South Vietnam Operational area and off the Malaya Peninsula. Petty Officer Airman O’Neill was discharged in Perth on 16 November 1969.
