British War Medal 1914-20 (Lt. Col. S. Gaitskell, R.M.) nearly extremely fine £70-90

Sydney Gaitskell was born on 25 February 1867. Commissioned into the Royal Marines as a Lieutenant on 1 September 1884, he was promoted Captain on 1 September 1895, received the Brevet of Major on 1 September 1905, was promoted to Major on 11 March 1908 and to Lieutenant-Colonel on 24 September 1914. Sold with two group photographs inscribed, ‘H.M.S. Jupiter 1898’, invitation to Major S. Gaitskell, R.M.A. from the Corporation of London for a Déjeûner in the Guildhall, 22 July 1909, together with a progamme and menu booklet; an invitation to Major & Bt. Lt. Col. Gaitskell to ‘Shannon and Chesapeake’ Centenany Dinner and an undated letter of invitation to Colonel Gaitskell for luncheon at Longwood Old House. Together with H.E.I.Co. Bengal Establishment Commission documents, appointing James Gandy Gaitskell an Ensign, dated 1837; another (torn) appointing him a Lieutenant of Infantry, dated 1837 and another appointing him a Captain of Infantry, dated 1845; these together with three associated letters.
