William Darling was born in Barony, Lanarkshire and enlisted at Glasgow. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery (London Gazette 18 June 1917 (France)). He was killed in action on 17 April 1918, aged 29 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He was the son of Mr John Darling of 140 Duke Street, Glasgow.
