India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Jowaki 1877-8 (Surgeon N. J. Halpin, Bengal Medical Dept.), initials corrected, good very fine £240-280

Nicholas John Halpin was born on 12 September 1851. Gaining the B.A., M.B. and B.Ch. in 1875, he qualified as a Surgeon at Trinity College Dublin in 1876 and gained the M.D. in 1879 and was appointed a Licentiate of the King and Queen’s College of Physicians in 1881. Halpin served as a Surgeon on the Bengal Establishment during the Jowaki campaign of 1877-78. He was killed as a result of a fall from his horse, at Arrah, on 21 October 1882.
