Henry Langton Tollemache Inglis entered the Royal Marines as a 2nd Lieutenant on 24 June 1854, aged 18 years 6 months. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 30 October 1855, whilst aboard H.M.S. Russell, in which ship he served from February 1855 to May 1856, including operations in the Baltic Sea (Medal). He served at both Plymouth and Woolwich Headquarters from May 1856 until 12 March 1857, when he embarked aboard H.M.S. Sans Pareil as a supernumerary for service in China. He arrived at Fort William, Calcutta, on 11 August 1857, and joined H.M.S. Highflyer on 14 November 1858. Lieutenant Inglis was killed in action at the attack on the Forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho River, Cahina, on 25 June 1859. Medals were not awarded for this disastrous action in which the attacking force on shore had 64 officers and men killed, and 252 wounded. In addition, the squadron afloat had 25 officers and men killed, and 93 wounded.
