The Royal Victorian Order, G.C.V.O., Knight Grand Cross set of insignia, sash badge, silver-gilt and enamel; breast star, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, both unnumbered, with full sash ribbon, in Collingwood, London case of issue; French Yachting Prize Medallion, by L. Merley, obv. head of Napoleon III left; rev. laurel wreath and inscribed, ‘Cercle Nautique de la Méditerranée, Aviron, Premier Prix Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, Cannes, 1868-1869, 57mm., silver-gilt, in fitted leather case, nearly extremely fine (3) £1000-1400

William Henry Edgcumbe, 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletorte, Baron Edgcumbe of Mount Edgcumbe of Co. Cornwall, P.C., G.C.V.O., D.C.L., D.L., was born in London in 1832 and succeeded his father to the titles in 1861. Educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. He was Lord Lieutenant for Cornwall from 1877; Vice-Admiral of Cornwall; D.C.L. Oxford; M.P. for Plymouth, 1859-61; Equerry and afterwards Lord-in-Waiting to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales; Lord Chamberlain in the H.M. Household, 1879-80; Lord Steward in H.M. Household, 1885-86 & 1886-92; Brigadier-General of the Plymouth Volunteer Brigade 1878-82; Hon. Colonel of the 2nd Prince of Wales Volunteer Battalion Devonshire Regiment; A.D.C. to the Queen, 1887-97; Keeper of the Privy Seal to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales from 1907 onwards and Provincial Grand Master of the Freemasons of Cornwall from 1869. Amongst his clubs listed in Who was Who was that of the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes. He died on 25 September 1917 and was succeeded by his son, the Viscount Valletorte (see lot 865).
