Frederick David Arthur Hewett was born at Whitechapel, Middlesex and enlisted at London. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 20 September 1914 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment.

The following is extracted from the regimental history: ‘The 1st West Yorks were with the 18th Brigade, 6th Division. They arrived in France on 10 September and took over trenches north of one of the Aisne crossings near Bourg on the night of 19 September. Germans attacked next day and within 24 hours only 5 officers and 250 other ranks were left of the original 27 officers and 959 other ranks who only 11 days before had landed so hopefully.’
