Alexander Vass Anderson was born on 24 November 1856. He gained the M.B. C.M. in 1880 and D.P.H. 1900. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon on 1 April 1882, he served in the Miranzai Expeditionary Force in 1891. Promoted to Surgeon-Major in April 1894, he attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in April 1904. He retired on 19 July 1907 but rejoined the service in India during the Great War, serving from 29 January 1915 to 5 June 1920.
