John George Faught was born in Kandy, Ceylon on 15 December 1832, the son of Rev. G. S. Faught, Rector of Bradfield St. Clare, Suffolk. He was educated at King William’s College, Isle of Man and qualified as a M.R.C.S. in 1854. Appointed a Staff Assistant Surgeon in October 1855, later serving with the 46th Foot and Royal Artillery, he was promoted to Staff Surgeon in November 1867 and Surgeon-Major in March 1873. He served in the Ashantee War during 1874 as Sanitary Officer at the Cape Coast Castle, and in the Afghan War of 1878-80, placed in medical charge of the 92nd Foot. Promoted to Brigade Surgeon in April 1880, he served with the Indian Contingent in the Egypt War of 1882. Futher advanced to Deputy Surgeon-General in September 1884, he served as Principal Medical Officer in the Bechuanaland Expedition, 1884-85 and was mentioned in despatches by Sir Charles Warren. Faught then served as P.M.O. in the Zululand Expedition, 1888. He attained the rank of Surgeon-General, afterwards Surgeon Major-General, in November 1890 and was placed on Retired Pay on 15 December 1892. Surgeon Major-General Faught held the position of Honorary Surgeon to the Queen, 1897-1901 and to the King, 1901-1910. He died at Langtone Lodge, Southsea on 12 June 1910.
