Richard Hamilton Batty was born in the Parish of St. John’s, Leeds in July 1841. He qualified as L.R.C.S.I. in 1863 and L.S.A. in 1866 and entered the Indian Medical Department as an Assistant Surgeon in April 1867. He was promoted Surgeon in July 1873 and Surgeon-Major in April 1879 and retired on 24 June 1887. Batty died at Newnham on 1 September 1925. He served in the Abyssinia Campaign of 1867-68, in the Afghan War during 1879-80, serving with the 4th Bombay Rifles in the 1st Division Kandahar Field Force, being present throughout the siege and at the battle of Kandahar, and lastly, in the Burma Expedition of 1885-87.
