Edward John Gayer was born on 22 December 1833. Gaining the L.R.C.S.I., he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon on 2 January 1856. He served in the Indian Mutiny 1857-58, seeing service with the advance force from Allahabad under Major Renaud, in medical charge of the 13th Irregular Cavalry, 30 June-12 July 1857; with the 84th Regiment, 13 July-7 August 1857, in the actions of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo, Nuddee, Cawnpore, Oona and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd battles at Busseerutgunge; with the Royal Artillery, 8-21 August, in the action at Bithnoor; with the Cawnpore Field Hospital, 22 August-18 September 1857; with the 1/5th Fusiliers, 19 September-17 October 1857, at Muggewara, Alum Bagh and in the 1st relief of Lucknow; served at the Residency attached to the 78th Highlanders, 18 October-27 November 1857; served at a Field Hosptal, 28 November-6 December 1857; and was present at the defeat of the Gwalior Rebels at Cawnpore on 7 December 1857. He attained the rank of Surgeon-Major in July 1873 and died in Calcutta on 12 August 1878.
