A C.I.E. group of three awarded to Deputy Surgeon-General S. B. Partridge, Indian Medical Service, who attended the mortally wounded Sir Henry Lawrence during the defence of Lucknow

Samuel Brown Partridge was born in November 1828 and studied at King’s College, London, gaining the M.R.C.S. and L.S.A. in 1851. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon on 12 October 1852, he served in the Burmese War during 1853. During the Indian Mutiny he served in the defence of Lucknow, in the action at Cawnpore and the siege and capture of Lucknow. For his services during the defence of the Lucknow he was mentioned in Brigadier Inglis’s despatches and awarded the rank of Brevet Surgeon - one of five Assistant Surgeons who had served in and survived the siege to be so awarded. Partridge is mentioned as one of the doctors attending the mortally wounded Sir Henry Lawrence during the siege. He and Dr Ogilvie (See D.N.W. 17 September 2004, lot 97) agreeing that any operation upon the wounded man would be hopeless (Ref. Ordeal at Lucknow, by Michael Joyce). Appointed a F.R.C.S. (Edinburgh) in 1858, he was promoted to Surgeon on 15 June 1864 and Surgeon-Major on 12 October 1872. Partridge retired with the rank of Deputy Surgeon-General on 1 January 1880 and was awarded the C.I.E. on 3 June 1893, being a Member of the Medical Board of the India Office, 1876-79 and 1889-93. He died at Anerley, Kent on 7 May 1898. Sold with some copied service details.
