Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Asst. Surgn., XXth Regt.), engraved naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Asst. Surgn., 38th Regt.); Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Sur. Maj., A.M.D.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, unnamed, fitted with ‘British Crimea’ style suspension with blank clasp, some edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine and better (4) £850-950

Thomas Wright was born in Kilkenny on 30 November 1831. Becoming a M.R.C.S., he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon with the 20th Regiment on 21 April 1854. With them he served in the Crimean War, being present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann, at the siege of Sebastopol, including the First and Final Attacks on the Redan, and the bombardment and capture of Kinbourn. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon with the 38th Regiment in July 1857, he served with them in the Indian Mutiny and took part in the overthrow of the Gwalior Contingent before Cawnpore, 6 November 1857, at the capture of Meeangunge, siege and capture of Lucknow including the storming of Kaiser Bagh, and in operations in Oudh. Promoted to Surgeon on 20 June 1865, he served with the 80th Regiment and then the 93rd Highlanders. Promoted to Surgeon-Major with the A.M.D. on 1 March 1873, he served in the Afghan War in medical charge of the European Base Hospital of the Kurram Field Force, November 1879-November 1880. He retired with the honorary rank of Brigade Surgeon on 7 May 1884 and died on 20 July 1900.
