John Robert Taylor was born on 14 October 1810 and appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Army Medical Department on 31 May 1833. After service with the 58th Foot, he was appointed Surgeon to the 29th Foot on 14 June 1842. With them he served in the First Sikh War before being transferred to the 80th Foot in 1848. Appointed Deputy Inspector-General in 1855, he was awarded the C.B. in 1856 and advanced to Inspector-General in 1858. Taylor was appointed Queen’s Honorary Surgeon in 1859. He retired on Half Pay on 11 August 1863 and died at Cheltenham on 23 December 1892.
