John Harrison was born on 7 July 1787. He was first appointed as Hospital Mate on 30 December 1808, and as Assistant Surgeon to the 1st Foot Guards on 29 June 1809. He served in the Walcheren expedition in 1809; at Cadiz and in the Peninsula, in 1811, 12, and 13; in the expedition to Holland in 1814; in the Netherlands and France from 1814 till 1818. He was present at the assault of Seville, bombardment of Antwerp, storming of Bergen-op-Zoom, battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, and the taking of Peronne. He became Battalion Surgeon in the Grenadier Guards in April 1824, and Surgeon Major in March 1837. He retired on half pay in April 1840 and died in London on 21 March 1873.
