Alfred William Vincent Crawley, who was born in Luton, England, enlisted in the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles at Pincher Creek, in December 1899, aged 29 years, where he had recently been working as a Veterinary Surgeon. Embarked for South Africa, he was dangerously wounded in an action at Bethlehem, near Pretoria on 3 July 1900, and was invalided to England in December of the same year. Subsequently mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts in April 1901, the recommendation for his D.C.M. was submitted to the King on 3 August of the same year (Army Order 15/02).
