The original C.S.I. warrant and related documentation appertaining to W. J. Money, Bengal Civil Service, who was Private Secretary to Sir James Outram in the Indian Mutiny 1857-58, when he accompanied the General in the Field, the warrant in the name of ‘William James Money, Esquire’, dated at ‘Balmoral Castle’ 2 June 1869 and signed by Queen Victoria, together with related forwarding letter from the Secretary of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, dated 22 September 1869, and an old printed sheet bearing several testimonials relating to Money’s distinguished career, generally in good condition (Lot) £60-80

William James Money, who was educated at Cheltenham and Haileybury, entered the Bengal Civil Service in 1853 and was appointed an Assistant Magistrate and Collector at Monghyr in the following year. He was subsequently employed as a Civil Officer during the Santal Insurrection of 1855-56, active service experience that no doubt assisted him in his next appointment as Private Secretary to Sir James Outram, for he accompanied that distinguished General in the Field throughout the Indian Mutiny 1857-58, when he was present at the relief of Lucknow, and the final siege, and at the Alumbagh (Thanked by the Governor-General in Council, despatches and Medal with 2 clasps). Among his latter appointments were those of Magistrate and Collector at Cuttack 1861-66 and District and Sessions Judge, Maimansingh 1873. He retired in 1879 and died in July 1910.
