A rare Colonial Police operations G.M. awarded to Assistant Superintendent P. W. Muskett, Sierra Leone Police Force

George Medal
, E.II.R., 1st issue (Peter Wallace Muskett), in its Royal Mint case of issue, nearly extremely fine £1000-1200

G.M. London Gazette 9 October 1956:

‘Mr. Muskett was in charge of a riot unit during disturbances in Sierra Leone and was almost continuously engaged in all the major operations carried out by the police in the Northern Province. His confidence and resolution were an inspiration to all ranks concerned.

At Roruks his unit was engaged in dispersing a riotous mob of between 3000 and 4000 persons, which was attacking his men heavily with stones and slings from the front and both flanks. The unit was at one stage badly shaken and in grave danger of being over-run, but the situation was saved by Mr. Muskett’s calmness, gallantry and leadership. He was injured three times by slung stones, but shortly afterwards, without proper rest or treatment, he was moved to another area where once again he was repeatedly involved in the dispersal of violent and determined mobs.

This young officer’s resolute, determined and courageous leadership over a prolonged period of semi-continuous action, alternating with long journeys under conditions of serious hardship, contributed substantially to the restoration of order in that part of the Protectorate.’

Sold with two original congratulatory letters, one from the C.O. of the Sierra Leone Police Force and the other from the Private Secretary at Government House, Sierra Leone, both dated October 1956.
