Samuel Clarke, a farmer from Walton-by-Kimcote, Leicestershire, attested for service in the Grenadier Guards on 10 December 1914, aged 19 years, 11 months. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 26 July 1915, returning to England on 2 October, having a suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg on 27 September. Making a full recovery, he returned to France on 14 April 1916 only to suffer shell shock on 3 July resulting in a return to England on 7 July. Restored to health, he again returned to France on 10 November 1917, returning home on 21 September 1918, possibly due to a gun shot wound to the hip received on 25 August.
