William Carter was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, and living in Penhurst, enlisted at London. He served with the Royal Irish Regiment in the Boer War and was entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal and L.S.& G.C. Medal. As a Company Sergeant-Major serving with the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, he was killed in action at Gallipoli on 15 August 1915 - in the action on Kireteh Tepe Ridge. His name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. He was the son of Milton Carter of 6 Taddington Road, Seaside, Eastbourne and husband of Sarah Carter of Stanhope Cottage, Watch Oak, Battle, Sussex.
