5290 Private Thomas B. Bell, 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was severely wounded at Colenso, 15 December 1899 (listed with the initial ‘J’ in the published casualty roll). In the Great War, Serjeant Bell entered the Balkan theatre of war on 25 April 1915, landing at Gallipoli on Helles “V” Beach. The casualties of the 1st Battalion from 25 April to 1 May 1915 were: killed or died of wounds - 10 officers and 152 other ranks; wounded - 13 officers and 329 other ranks; missing - 21 other ranks. On 1 May 1915 the active strength of the battalion was 1 officer and 374 other ranks.
