Cl.2, Welsh R.) first two with slight edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine and better (5) £200-250

Joseph Hewitt was born in Fulham, London and attested for the Welsh Regiment on 14 July 1890, aged 15 years. Appointed a Drummer in the Welsh Regiment in January 1891, he served overseas in Malta, September 1890-November 1893 and South Africa, 4 November 1899-8 August 1904. He served in Egypt, December 1909-January 1914 and was then sent to India. Returning to England later in the year and was promoted to Serjeant in October 1914. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 18 January 1915 and received a gunshot wound to the left arm and side on 19 February 1915. Hewitt was promoted to Colour Sergeant and C.Q.M.S. on 25 May 1915. He was discharged on 27 April 1919. Sold with original photograph of the recipient (and dog) and copied attestation papers and m.i.c.
