Three: Gunner’s Mate J. Hill, Royal Navy

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (Gunrs. Mte., H.M.S. Achilles); Royal Navy L.S.& G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Jesse Hill, Gunrs. Mate, H.M.S. Achilles), impressed naming; Khedive’s Star, 1882, unnamed as issued, minor edge bruising, very fine (3) £180-220

Jesse Hill was born in Cornwood, Devon on 25 January 1847. A Cooper by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 25 June 1865. Gaining the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class in March 1876 when serving on the Royal Adelaide. He served on the Achilles from 1 September 1880 to 3 August 1884, during which time he saw service in the Egyptian War of 1882 and was awarded the Long Service Medal. He was pensioned ashore, with the rank of Gunner’s Mate, on 12 July 1885. Sold with copied service details.
