John Morgans, who was born in Carmarthen, originally enlisted in the 49th Foot in October 1844, aged 18 years. Advanced to Corporal in March 1848, he was reduced to Private by Court Martial for ‘neglect of duty when on escort’ in October of the following year. Although restored his Corporal’s stripes at the end of 1851, he elected to transfer to the 57th Foot shortly afterwards, in which regiment he attained the rank of Sergeant in September 1854, on the eve of his participation in the Crimea War. A verified recipient of the above described Medal with 3 clasps, he was severely wounded in the left thigh in the attack on the Redan on 18 June 1855. Morgans was honourably discharged in the rank of Colour-Sergeant at Manchester in August 1867, having served in the West Yorkshire Militia since early 1864.
