Alexander Niven was born in Aberdeen, in the County of Kincardine, and was enlisted at the age of 18 years into the 92nd Regiment on 24th February 1807. He was promoted to Corporal in 1814 and served in Captain Claud Alexander’s company at Waterloo. He was discharged on 4 March 1817, ‘in consequence of a reduction to the establishment in the Non Commissioned Officers of the Corps and of incapacity from various wounds of both limbs received at the Battle of Waterloo and in other actions.’ His discharge papers note elsewhere ‘both thighs at Mayo,’ and ‘right ankle at Waterloo’. Niven was admitted to pension of 6d per day at Chelsea Hospital on 20 March 1817, suffering, according to the Register of admissions, ‘from general debility and severe wounds of both limbs’.
