Samuel George Fairchild was born in Marylebone, London. A postman by occupation, he served in the 24th Battalion Middlesex V.R.C. before the war and was awarded the Volunteer Long Service Medal. Enlisting into the Labour Corps on 7 September 1914 he served throughout the war, being discharged due to sickness, with the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant, on 22 May 1919. For his wartime services he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals and Silver War Badge. Post-war, he resumed his employment with the Post Office and, as Head Postman, London Postal Service, he was duly awarded the Imperial Service Medal (London Gazette 5 March 1929).
