Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (1327 Sergt. C. Sclater, 70th Foot) slight edge bruising, very fine £100-120

Charles Sclater was born in Calcutta, India, and enlisted into the Army at Aldershot on 14 May 1867, aged 16 years, 6 months. With the 70th Foot he served in India from 7 October 1871 to 3 March 1885, the Afghan Medal being his only award. He attained the rank of Sergeant in August 1873 but was reduced to Private in November after being found guilty of ‘leaving barracks when on duty’. He regained the rank in December 1878. Sergeant Sclater was discharged in July 1885 as ‘Medically unfit for further service’. Sold with copied service papers.
