Frank Arthur Rhodes was born in Camden Town, London on 1 April 1874 and was educated at St. Mark’s College, Chelsea. A Commercial Traveller by occupation, he enlisted into the Surrey Yeomanry on 29 May 1901. He was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in July 1911 as a ‘Sergeant-Trumpeter’. With the onset of war he was the Squadron Sergeant-Major for “B” Squadron Surrey Yeomanry and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 18 January 1915, becoming a Warrant Officer Class II on 28 January. He remained in France until November that year and then served in the Mediterranean theatre of war, 7 November 1915-22 May 1916 before returning home to England. He was discharged to a commission in the Protection Company, London District, Royal Defence Corps on 30 September 1916, joining the unit at 2 Duke Street, London, W.C.1. On his discharge papers it read, ‘Served with the Colours in the Surrey (Q.M.R.) Yeo. for 15 yrs. 126 days & during that time he has proved himself a capable N.C.O. When serving overseas he was employed in the Divisional Office on clerical work’. Rhodes was promoted to Lieutenant on 3 April 1918 and later served as an Acting Captain in the Royal Defence Corps. Sold with 19 copied sheets of service papers.
