Lawrence Harold Wilfred Bird was born in Clapham, London on 27 July 1884. By occupation, a Clerk to the Grand Secretary of Freemasons, and having served 4 years in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Bird enlisted into the Surrey Yeomanry on 3 March 1911. With “C” Squadron, Surrey Yeomanry, he entered the Egypt theatre of war on 19 March 1915. Bird had applied for a commission in September and October 1914 but his name had been removed when his unit was ordered to the front. Re-applying, he was discharged to a commission in the R.G.A. on 27 September 1917. Serving in France/Flanders from 14 December 1917, he was wounded on 22 January 1918. Making a recovery, he was for a short time (March/April), attached to No.15 Squadron R.F.C. as liason officer. He rejoined his R.G.A. unit on 20 April 1918. He was demobilized on 16 April 1919. Sold with 16 copied sheets of service papers and correspondence.
