Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Martinique, Busaco, Albuhera (S. Nicoll, Serjt., 7th Foot) edge bruise, otherwise good very fine £1200-1400

Samuel Nicoll was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire. A Cotton Spinner by occupation, he enlisted into the 7th Foot in 1805, aged 18 years. Serving with the regiment in the Peninisular War, he was discharged on 14 August 1812 as a consequence of a gunshot wound to the right arm at Albuhera, 16 May 1811. Clasps confirmed. Sold with copied discharge papers and notes, and with an original parchment character reference:

‘I Certify that the conduct of Serjeant Samuel Nicholl (sic) during the entire Period He served in the Royal Fusiliers under My Command was good and Soldierlike. His bravery in the Field was remarkable and I always considered him an honest Trustworthy Man’ (signed) ‘E. Blakeney, Lt. General, Royal Hospital, Dublin, 2 Novr. 1842’.
